Government data released today, Monday, indicates that the Democratic Republic of Congo has for the first time seen the number of confirmed Ebola virus cases surpass the 8,000 mark, as part of the ongoing outbreak in the Central African nation.
The latest situational report from the Institute of Public Health points to 8,067 registered cases and 3,901 deaths attributed to the virus, according to Reuters. This current outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, is now considered the
largest and deadliest in Congo's history, exceeding the impact of the previous outbreak between 2018 and 2020. It is only surpassed in scale and lethality by the West African Ebola epidemic from 2014 to 2016, which affected over 28,600 individuals
and claimed more than 11,000 lives in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
