News was confirmed on Wednesday regarding the deaths of at least sixty individuals following a gold mine collapse last Sunday in the town of Al-Nuhud, located in Sudan's West Kordofan state. Sudan stands among Africa's leading gold producers; however, a
significant portion of its output relies on hazardous, rudimentary mining methods, often subsequently smuggled out of the country. The substantial increase in casualties at this remote site is attributed to a severe lack of safety measures and essential rescue equipment
within the primitive mine. West Kordofan state is under the control of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, for whom gold mining represents a primary source of revenue.
