Huawei has further cemented its position in the foldable phone market after the Huawei Pura X Max achieved a strong launch, surpassing sales of all the company's previous foldable devices within one month of its release. In a recent video, Yu
Chengdong, CEO and Head of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, elucidated several design decisions that contributed to the device's significant success. He indicated that the company focused on addressing key challenges users encountered with previous generations of foldable phones. One of the
most prominent design elements of the phone is its screen aspect ratio, which is approximately √2:1 when fully unfolded – the same ratio used for A4 paper. This ratio was meticulously chosen to provide a more natural viewing experience, ensuring
seamless content transition between folded and unfolded modes without any distortions or bothersome changes in display. This design philosophy aims to make the phone feel more like a small tablet when opened, while maintaining ease of use and comfort when
held and closed. The company noted that its studies revealed the majority of foldable phone users still spend most of their usage time with the device in its folded state. Despite this, Huawei dedicated substantial effort to enhancing the large internal
screen experience. This was achieved through redesigning bezels, reducing frames, and optimizing the display of frequently used content, while considering crucial factors such as the average natural viewing distance of approximately 30 centimeters and eye movement during reading or content
consumption. According to data published by the well-known tech analyst @RDObservation, the Pura X Max series recorded estimated sales of around 343,700 units during its first month of launch, up to the end of May 2026. This figure represents the best
performance achieved by any Huawei foldable phone series within the same post-launch period. Interestingly, the higher-priced Collector’s Edition alone accounted for approximately 198,500 units of the total sales, reflecting a strong and notable demand for luxury versions despite their high
costs. Counterpoint data also indicated that this phone is outperforming the Huawei Mate X7 and previous generations of the Pura X series in terms of initial sales pace. Observers suggest that the phone's early success is attributed to Huawei’s focus on
delivering a practical and functional design, rather than merely pursuing aesthetic innovation. The device offers a tablet-like experience when unfolded, while maintaining a relatively compact size when folded, in addition to leveraging the advanced software enhancements provided by the HarmonyOS
operating system. While the current figures reflect a very strong and promising start, Huawei’s real challenge will be to sustain this significant momentum in the coming months. This challenge is intensified by the escalating competition in the foldable phone market and
the emergence of new, innovative devices from major rival companies. Nevertheless, initial indicators strongly suggest that the Pura X Max has successfully attracted consumer interest due to its unique combination of thoughtful design and practical user experience, which could provide
Huawei with a strong additional boost and a competitive advantage in the foldable phone market in the forthcoming period.
