An Iran Air state-owned aircraft landed at Istanbul Airport on Wednesday, arriving from the capital Tehran. This event underscores the continuity of regular flights between the two countries, even amidst an intensified American sanctions campaign broadly targeting Iran's civil aviation
sector. Flight tracking data revealed that flight IR719 departed from Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran and touched down in Istanbul at 10:43 AM local time, experiencing a delay of over an hour from its scheduled arrival. The flight was operated
using an Airbus A330-200 aircraft. This journey occurs as Washington escalates its pressure on Iranian aviation. On September 8, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed additional sanctions on 27 Iranian airlines, along with foreign companies and brokers providing services to the sector.
It issued warnings of potential secondary sanctions against any foreign entities assisting targeted Iranian companies. Iran Air itself is already listed under U.S. sanctions. The Treasury Department re-designated it in September 2024 over allegations related to the transfer of military equipment
and materials, having previously been listed as a company controlled by the Iranian government. The continuation of Iran Air flights to Istanbul has gained increased significance following Iranian Mahan Air's announcement to halt its flights to Turkey, including routes to Istanbul
and Ankara, effective September 21. This decision comes amidst tightening U.S. restrictions and mounting pressure on companies offering ground and commercial services to Iranian carriers. The landing of an Iran Air aircraft at Istanbul Airport does not, in itself, constitute a
Turkish violation of U.S. sanctions. However, the ongoing operation of these flights highlights that Washington's measures have not yet managed to halt all Iranian air routes to Turkey, despite the expanded scope of restrictions and risks imposed on entities providing
them financial or commercial services.
