Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi, on Tuesday, issued a directive to prepare a draft law aimed at restricting weapons to state control, in accordance with established constitutional procedures. This directive followed his reception of Khaled Mutab Al-Obaidi, head of the Parliamentary
Security and Defense Committee, and its members, during which they thoroughly reviewed the current security situation nationwide. The meeting addressed efforts by various security agencies to enforce security and stability, protecting the country's borders and airspace from diverse threats, particularly
amid unfolding regional events and their rapid repercussions. Al-Zaidi clarified that unregulated weapons pose the gravest threat to the state, as they undermine the rule of law and directly weaken the prestige of security institutions. He emphasized strengthening the state's sovereignty,
prestige, and constitutional institutions, alongside enhancing military capabilities to ensure internal stability. This stability is closely linked to economic, political, and security stability, safeguarding Iraq's security, safety, and national assets. He stressed the necessity of integrated and effective coordination between executive
and legislative authorities to bolster stability, legislate essential laws, and provide legislative cover for governmental development plans. He also noted the importance of regular periodic meetings with the Security and Defense Committee to accomplish these vital objectives. For his part, Al-Obaidi,
head of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, affirmed the committee's full support, through its oversight and legislative role, for all government measures to strengthen state, security, and military institutions. This includes enhancing armed forces capabilities, protecting borders, developing air
defense systems, and raising readiness, to fortify Iraq's security and sovereignty against regional and international crises.
