Recent research indicates that the impact of rising global temperatures on rice production could be twice as significant as earlier estimates, raising serious concerns for food security in regions heavily reliant on this staple crop. A study published in the
journal Science revealed that a one-degree Celsius increase in average global temperature could result in an 8.1% reduction in global rice yields. This figure is double previous estimates, which projected losses at approximately half this rate. As rice serves as
the primary food source for over half of the world's population, any substantial decline in its productivity poses a significant threat to highly populated nations, notably across Asia. Researchers meticulously analyzed data from 214 diverse field experiments conducted globally. These
experiments assessed how rice plants respond to elevated temperatures throughout their growth phases, with particular attention to stages most vulnerable to heat stress. The analyses unveiled that exposure to temperatures ranging between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius, or to extreme
heat surpassing 35 degrees Celsius, constitutes the leading cause of most crop losses. Furthermore, researchers emphasized that the timing of heatwaves is as crucial as their intensity. Rice plants exhibit peak vulnerability during the reproductive stage, encompassing vital processes like
flower formation and grain development. According to the study, each additional day during this critical period where temperatures exceed 30 degrees Celsius contributes to a reduction in rice productivity, ranging from 1.1% to 1.8%.
