The United States Air Force is actively pursuing initiatives to enhance its cargo aircraft fleet by transforming them into advanced platforms for launching swarms of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This ambitious project aims to bolster base security, as the Air

Force intends to deploy these modified planes, along with their drone payloads, within its bases. These AI-controlled drones would then be capable of autonomously defending the installations against potential attacks, according to specialized defense reports. A request for proposals issued by

the Air Force's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, with a submission deadline of October 21, clarifies that the project seeks to convert cargo aircraft into "adaptable launch platforms and force multipliers that provide rapidly deployable swarms for base security." The

U.S. Air Force is working towards a tripartite agreement, with one of its objectives being to equip transport aircraft with integrated intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities. This includes enabling them to function as high-altitude motherships for drones, a concept

previously demonstrated when a C-130 aircraft successfully recovered an X-61 Gremlin mid-air. Discussions within the U.S. Air Mobility Command have also revealed an exploration into utilizing KC-135 refueling aircraft as potential launch platforms.
