Spotify has removed over 50 million music tracks from user recommendations since the beginning of 2026, aiming to reduce poor and annoying content, including tracks generated by artificial intelligence. The platform stated that such tracks do not meet its recommendation
standards and has updated its systems to protect the listening experience and allocate more space for music created by human artists. The updates involved a thorough review of tracks that listeners frequently skipped, ignored, or requested not to hear, revealing
that many belonged to the category of annoying or low-quality content. Over the past six months, Spotify has implemented several adjustments to its recommendation system to highlight more authentic music produced by artists, emphasizing that its editorial teams exclude this
type of content from their playlists. Following these changes, there has been a noticeable decline in user complaints about annoying tracks appearing in recommendations. The platform relies on multiple indicators to identify problematic tracks, including listener interactions and feedback, upload
patterns, metadata, and third-party AI detection tools. Spotify emphasizes that no single indicator suffices to flag violating content, thus it combines various sources to enhance detection accuracy. The company also works to identify new evasion tactics such as mass uploading
of tracks, content repetition, search result manipulation, creating networks of playlists to spread annoying content, and artificially producing short clips. These measures are part of a strategy launched a year ago to protect artists and listeners from spam, identity theft,
and misinformation amid the rise of AI technology. The platform has permanently removed more than 75 million annoying tracks due to severe or repeated violations, in addition to excluding over 50 million tracks from recommendations this year. Spotify acknowledges ongoing
challenges with the rapid evolution of AI but remains committed to continuously updating its systems to ensure a safe and rich listening environment, while fostering appreciation for human creativity on its platform.
