The United Nations World Food Programme confirmed that the repercussions of the ongoing field escalation in Yemen resulted in depriving about 800,000 people of urgent relief supplies, with the majority of those affected concentrated inside the city of Taiz, located

in the southwestern part of the country, amidst serious warnings regarding the near depletion of available wheat flour reserves. A formal statement issued by the UN agency indicated that the developments of battles, the shift in the scope of clashes

alongside the road closures and the growth of security risks have created severe obstacles to delivering humanitarian support to those affected in Taiz and other points witnessing armed tensions. The program clarified that through its cooperation with partner entities, it

is unable to reach more than 600,000 needy people in Taiz whose livelihoods depend on relief support, and this category includes wide numbers of women and children exceeding two hundred thousand individuals. With the addition of communities cut off from

relief ways on the western coast of Yemen during the early days of last September, the total of individuals whom relief teams failed to reach jumped to the mentioned figure. The report pointed out that the districts of Taiz, classified

as the third largest city in Yemen, host the largest gatherings of forcibly displaced persons since the outbreak of the crisis, at a time when those concerned are unable to communicate with a wide sector of them due to the

continuation of combat operations and the threatening closure of roads surrounding the governorate completely. The program expressed grave concern over these developments, especially since the governorate suffers from very advanced rates of food insecurity, given the classification of a sufficient

number of districts at the humanitarian emergency threshold. Data extracted from recent monitoring operations warned that the reserve inventory of wheat flour material has become close to complete depletion, and the quantities available for sale in local markets may be

limited in sufficiency for a short period if the imposed obstacles to transport movement remain in place. In a related context, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs OCHA indicated that the numbers of forcibly displaced persons

recorded a notable escalation to reach the mentioned total figure since last August, warning that the persistence of clashes and the expansion of displacement significantly exacerbates the volume of basic needs in various governorates, coinciding with a military escalation that

began during last July and is considered the most prominent since the calm period that followed the truce agreement concluded in April 2022.
