Recent American intelligence reports, compiled over recent weeks, indicate that Iran has grown more confident in its capacity to attack targets across the Middle East. It appears resolute in prolonging the conflict for months, aiming to exhaust the United States
and frustrate its objectives. These assessments, in many respects, reflect what can be observed on the ground, with renewed fighting following a period of relative calm. Last week, Iran targeted vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and American forces in the
region, while US forces carried out strikes inside Iran, resulting in military and civilian casualties. Although the latest military exchanges remain limited thus far, intelligence reports, according to individuals familiar with them, suggest the Iranian government may be considering a
significant escalation. Officials briefed on these intelligence findings state that Iran has emerged from months of intermittent warfare with a much clearer understanding of its military strengths, leading to increased confidence in its capabilities. The reports, according to current and former
officials, indicate that reaching an agreement to fully end the war will be challenging. There are few signs of Iran's willingness to conclude any deal with the United States, with some assessments suggesting Tehran is content with the escalating political
difficulties faced by President Donald Trump ahead of the US midterm elections. Currently, Trump is not pursuing negotiations, having stated his belief that economic pressure can compel Iran to make concessions regarding its control over the Strait, and potentially ultimately concerning
its nuclear program. However, officials who reviewed the intelligence reports cautioned that US economic sanctions are likely to continue pushing Iran towards escalation in the short term. American officials anticipate that Iran may undertake actions similar to those carried out last
July in the coming weeks. At that time, Iran attacked US military bases in the Middle East, resulting in the deaths of three Americans in Jordan. It also targeted vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and struck facilities and infrastructure
in Kuwait and other locations. Furthermore, US officials also believe that Iranian-linked hackers were likely responsible for cyberattacks targeting over 100 water systems across the United States in late July. While there were no indications of any system being damaged in
a way that rendered water unsafe for consumption, these attacks in some cases led to disruptions requiring manual system operation and the issuance of precautionary boil-water advisories. Current and former officials added that the hackers have also shown interest in
targeting US oil and gas infrastructure, although these systems are generally considered more difficult to breach, and it remains unclear if any energy systems were compromised. According to current and former American officials, there are indications that Iranian-linked hackers have
reorganized in recent months after incurring some losses early in the conflict. Even in the absence of severe disruptions, cyberattacks are likely to remain an attractive means for Iran to attempt to undermine public support within the United States for
an unpopular war that appears to have no clear end, according to former intelligence officials and security experts.
