As technology companies accelerate the development of artificial intelligence that knows everything about us, questions are mounting regarding the fate of the information we share and our awareness of the terms we agree to when interacting. A recent analysis indicates
varied approaches by these companies in handling user data, especially in the absence of clear regulations. Some utilize data to personalize responses, others to train their systems, or to direct targeted advertisements. Companies' privacy policies are broadly categorized into three main
models. The first: maximum on-device protection. Apple adopts this approach, processing requests on your phone or personal device as much as possible to ensure data remains local. Should greater processing power be required, Apple employs a specialized cloud system, asserting
that data is used solely for the current request and then immediately discarded. However, using external services like ChatGPT via Apple devices overrides this protection. The second: extensive collection and expanded use. Meta employs an approach that grants it broad authority
to utilize user conversations with its Meta AI assistant for personalizing ads and content across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and even its smart glasses. The company affirms that it does not use conversations concerning sensitive topics like health, politics,
and religion for this purpose, and recently introduced a temporary private chat mode that instantly deletes data as an additional privacy option. The third: compromise solutions and varied options. Most other services fall under this category, offering a mix of choices.
Some enable temporary, unsaved conversations, while others require explicit permission before using your data. Conversely, some services consider users implicitly consenting unless they explicitly opt out. Control tools also differ: in certain applications, you can simply instruct the robot not
to remember specific information, whereas in others, managing the robot's memory about you necessitates navigating complex settings. The surprising realization is that the question is no longer "Does the company use my data for training?", but rather "How does this robot
form its understanding of me, and what will it do with this understanding in the future?". Today's companies do not merely collect data for system development; they build comprehensive personal profiles for each user. This profile can be leveraged not
only to enhance responses but also to extend conversation duration, influence opinions, and even persuade users to purchase specific products. Consumer AI is moving towards adopting a model akin to that observed with search engines and social media, where advertisements constitute
the primary source of revenue. Major companies like Google, Meta, and OpenAI are exploring methods to display ads within conversational robots, thereby increasing their incentive to gather as much user data as possible. Miranda Bogen, a technology expert at the Center
for Democracy and Technology, warns that "AI will increasingly rely on people voluntarily handing over their entire digital lives to these tools." She adds: "The more the system knows about you, the easier it becomes for it to ask you
for more private details in a way that seems natural." Bogen concludes her message by stating: "The value of having a smart personal assistant may be worth sacrificing some privacy for many, but consumers deserve to understand the details of this
deal before they start talking, not after it's too late." The most crucial question remains: In this race for personalization, will users retain real choice in determining the fate of their data, or will AI algorithms become the ones dictating
the new rules of privacy?
