The Ministry of Industry and Minerals announced on Tuesday the imminent launch of the second phase of a strategic project for steel industries. This initiative aims to boost local rebar production and provide diverse types and sizes to meet the
growing demands of the local market. In this context, Ahmed Hamid Zain al-Din, Director of the General Company for Steel Industries, clarified the details of the "Rolling and Continuous Casting" project, which comprises two phases. The first phase, specifically the Continuous
Arc Casting project, saw its production lines undergo development and modernization operations completed in May 2024 using the latest technologies, significantly enhancing its operational capacities. Zain al-Din added that the project currently yields 600,000 tons annually of "billet," which serves as
the primary raw material essential for operating the rolling project. He affirmed that local provision of this material will critically support the production chain and reduce the necessity of importing raw materials used in rebar manufacturing. The second phase, scheduled for
imminent inauguration, will facilitate the production of rebar in sizes ranging from 8 to 44 mm, with an estimated production capacity of 400,000 tons annually. Additionally, this phase is projected to produce approximately 200,000 tons annually of industrial iron. Zain al-Din
emphasized that the project constitutes a vital step in supporting the national industrial sector, enhancing its capability to fulfill a portion of the local demand for iron products, and supplying the market with a national product conforming to required specifications.
This will bolster local industry and curb reliance on imports. He also highlighted that operating the project will contribute to revitalizing sectors associated with the iron and steel industry. Furthermore, he noted the company's sustained commitment to completing the technical
and operational prerequisites in preparation for commencing commercial production, aligning with government plans aimed at rehabilitating and operating industrial projects and increasing the production capacities of public companies.
