The Holy Karbala Governorate has seen a substantial rise in its date palm yields this year, with production exceeding the 220,000-ton threshold. This marks an increase of approximately 40,000 tons compared to the previous year, an accomplishment attributed to the
new strategy adopted by the local government aimed at enhancing agricultural sector development within the province. In this regard, Hashim Al-Zuhairi, Director of Karbala Agriculture, reported that the Directorate operates under a comprehensive plan devised by the Governor of Karbala, which
has proven remarkably successful. The strategy centers on agricultural investment, encompassing both plant and animal aspects, alongside dedicated attention to date palm cultivation. Historically, the governorate is celebrated for its more than three million palm trees. He further explained that this
production surge stems from continuous governmental backing, a significant reduction in insect infestations—especially the Dubas pest—and intensified preventive campaigns against various pests and diseases. The expansion of areas allocated for date palm cultivation through new initiatives has also played a
crucial role in this growth. Nizar Abdul Ridha, Director of the Planning and Follow-up Department, stated that Karbala dates are recognized as distinguished Iraqi varieties, thanks to the fertility of its soil and ample water resources. He underscored the promising outlook
for further boosting productivity, in line with the current Ministry of Agriculture policy focused on supporting local produce, prohibiting imports, augmenting investment in this vital sector, and promoting the extensive planting of important date palm varieties.
