Gaza is facing a mounting humanitarian crisis as the United Nations World Food Programme was forced on Monday to significantly scale back its field operations due to a severe funding shortage. This acute lack of financial resources has resulted in

depriving nearly half a million people of their monthly food rations, which guaranteed the bare minimum for survival, at a time when field reports indicate that two-thirds of the total local population still suffer from critical and severe levels of

food insecurity. In a related context, the UN agency clarified that its operational plans witnessed a noticeable decline, with the number of targeted beneficiaries for monthly aid dropping from a previous total of 1.6 million beneficiaries down to only 1.1

million individuals currently. Meanwhile, WFP Country Director in the Palestinian Territories, Shaun Hughes, stated in press remarks to Agence France-Presse that the UN institution was compelled, starting this month, to abruptly drop half a million people from the roster of

recipients to whom it delivers relief assistance. The program emphasized in its statement that the intensive relief efforts deployed over the past period directly contributed to mitigating and averting the specter of real famine that struck areas of the Strip

last year. Nevertheless, the program issued stern warnings that the prevailing humanitarian reality has not witnessed a radical improvement that would allow for halting or scaling back ongoing humanitarian support in any way. From the UN agency office located in

East Jerusalem, Hughes pointed out that local residents still live in an environment lacking the bare minimum of safety and security, noting the ongoing daily and continuous airstrips and shelling, as well as recurring displacement waves that burden civilians. He

added that the absolute majority of families are left without stable shelter or permanent housing to protect them, while harsh living and humanitarian conditions continue to worsen day by day. The latest field assessments and evaluations confirm that about 1.4

million people, representing roughly two-thirds of the total population in the Strip, continue to face the severe threat of acute food insecurity, and are in urgent and continuous need of immediate humanitarian support to ensure their survival.
